For the Yorùbá People of Africa, and their numerous spiritual offspring of Voodoo, Santaria, and Condomble, Yemaya is the Orisha or Goddess of the Ocean and the Mother of All Living Beings. The name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means the Mother Whose Children are the Fish. The word means something a little different in Sanskrit, for Ye means they or those, and maya is a teacher or a poet with the name of an Asura for being versed in magic. It seems evident that there is a connection between the ancient African Religion and the Avesta of the Magians because the names Asura and Ahura are so similar many scholars consider them identical. In Sanskrit, an Asura means to be spiritual or divine or is a good or evil spirit. Asu is a part of the word which means the breath, the vital breath, life, or spirits, and ra means fire, desire, love, brightness, or speed, and such are the components for a human to become divine. To cast light upon that, the ancient texts also say an Asura is the Architect of the Daityas. A Daitya is a child of Diti, a deity answering to Aditi (infinite space), and the Preceptor or Teacher of the Daityas is connected to the Planet Sukra (the Planet Venus).
